Alaska Volcano Observatory
I am a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute. My primary research interests lie in integrating direct and remote measurements of volcanic gas composition and flux with complementary geophysical datasets to constrain volcanic processes. I employ various gas sampling techniques to collect volcanic gas measurements, ranging from direct sampling to satellite remote sensing. Most recently I have worked to constrain volatile cycling within the Aleutian Arc subduction zone using the chemical and isotopic composition of volcanic gases. The ultimate goal of this work is to relate subducted inputs to volatile outputs and volcanic activity. I have also recently worked with the UAF ACUASI group to integrate small gas sensing instruments onto unmanned aerial systems. I have been fortunate to work on numerous volcanoes around the world, most recently within the Central and Western Aleutians, Katmai National Park and Cook Inlet regions of Alaska; Kamchatka, Russia; Chile and Japan. The overall goal of my work is to use changes in volcanic gas composition and/or flux to provide insights into subvolcanic conditions and to help forecast impending eruptions and mitigate associated hazards.
